How do the following factors affect the climate of a place? Latitude Altitude

  1. Latitude: As the Earth is spherical in shape, different places receive different amount of Sunlight. As equatorial regions receive the direct rays of the Sun, they experience high temperatures. Polar regions receive extremely slanting rays of the Sun and hence experience a cool climate. Therefore, equatorial regions experience a hot climate while Polar regions experience an extremely cool climate.
  2. Altitude: Temperature decreases with an increase in height. This is because the air on higher altitudes contains less water vapour and dust particles (both water vapour and dust particles absorb heat from the surroundings). This is the reason that hill stations located on an altitude have a cooler climate than the plains.
