In the nineteenth century, many Indian historians began to write about the glorious past of the country. They refuted the claims of the British historians who had asserted that the Indians were primitive and never had any great culture. The Indian nationalists discovered and read about the Mauryan Age and Ashoka. They also studied about the discoveries made by the Indian mathematicians and astronomers. The Indian nationalists claimed that Indians had a glorious past. The Indian economy declined only after the colonisation of India by the British. This led to the emergence of the feeling of nationalism among the people.
