Let | x-2 | = x2 .........................(1)
If (x-2) >0 , then eqn.(1) becomes
(x-2) = x2
Hence , x2 - x + 2 = 0
above quadratic equation gives imaginary roots but x ∈ R .
Hence (x-2) is not positive
If (x-2) <0 , then let x = - α .
Hence eqn.(1) becomes
(α+2) = α2
α2 - α - 2 = 0
Above quadratic equation has roots
α = 2 or α = -1
Hence x = -2 and = 1
Hence , { x ∈ R : | x-2 | = x2 } = { -2, 1 }
