The following are the powers and functions of the Vice-President of India:
- As the Ex-Officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the Vice-President is required to regulate debates and proceedings of the House, decide the order of speeches and also determine the admissibility of resolutions and questions.
- He can suspend or adjourn the Rajya Sabhain case of grave disorder.
- He also issues directions to the Chairpersons of House Committees on matters relating to their functioning.
- The Vice-President takes over the President’s office in following instances:
- Death of the President.
- Resignation of the President.
- Removal of the President.
- The President is unable to discharge his duties due to absence, illness or any other reason.
- In case of the President’s death in office, resignation or removal, the Vice-President takes over until a new President is elected and enters upon his office.
