Expert Answer
According to the Constitution of India, the members of the Lok Sabha are elected for a period of five years. However, the Lok Sabha can be dissolved by the President of India before the expiry of its normal term on the advice of the Prime Minister or during the proclamation of a national emergency. Also, during the national emergency, the President can extend the term of the Lok Sabha for one year at a time. However, the Lok Sabha must be elected within six months after the national emergency has been lifted.
Example: The Lok Sabha was dissolved for the first time in 1971 when the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi advised the then President V. V. Giri to do so.
