With the British colonialists gradually taking over more Indian states, many court painters and other artisans lost their means of bread and butter. They either started to migrate to the smaller regional centres or sought work under the British. The British in turn often asked them to paint diverse secular themes such as monuments of import, festival scenes, plants and animals. These were displayed in colonial homes and were taken to England when their British owners went back to their homeland.
