The Lok Sabha is elected for a term of five years. However, it does not necessarily have a fixed term. There is a possibility that it can be dissolved even before it completes its term. This can happen when there is a ‘no-confidence’ motion passed against the government. Because the government losses its majority, it cannot rule the country. The President then has to look for an alternative, and if there is no backing for another member, then the Lok Sabha is dismissed. Fresh elections take place in the country, and the members of the Lok Sabha are elected.
Sometimes, the term of the Lok Sabha can be extended if there is an emergency. For example, the 5th Lok Sabha term, i.e. 1971-1977.
