The following is the contribution of G.K. Gokhale as a member of the Imperial Legislative Council:

  1. Gokhale became a member of the Imperial Legislative Council in 1902. He  He made several appeals in the Council for reduction in Salt Duty and the abolition of excise duty on cotton goods.
  2. It was partly due to his unfailing efforts that the toll tax was reduced.
  3. He made efforts to introduce a bill making primary education compulsory for children. However, he was not successful in taking this cause further.
  4. He demanded changes in the fiscal policy and better jobs for the educated middle class of India.
  5. He impressed on the British government the need to reduce the land revenue.
