The Sikhs emerged an an important power in the 18th century. In 1708 Guru Govind Singh was stabbed to death by an Afghan assassin. But the Sikhs were united under Banda Bahadur. With 40,000 Sikh armed men Banda defeated the Mughal army near Sirhind and occupied Sirhind in 1710. Later, he was captured by the Mughals and tortured to death. The Sikhs became stron in Punjab after the departure of Ahmed Shah Abdali. The Sikhs later were organised and united under the leadership of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
