The American civil War was fought between 1861-65. About y lakh people lost their lives in the civil war. The war was fought because the southern states had left the Union. During the war, the southern states fought with determination and courage. They had brilliant generals such as Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. Under their leadership, the southern states won a number of initial battles. 

However, the Northern states with its superior resources were able to clamp down the confederacy of the southern states. Lee surrendered to the Union General, Ulysses Grant in April 1865. This marked an end to the Civil War.
