The growth of multicellular organisms is due to mitosis. Growth of the cell results in an increase in the amount of cytoplasm causing the cell to increase in size. As a result, the ratio between the cytoplasm and the nucleus gets disturbed. In order to restore the standard ratio between the nucleus and the cytoplasm the growing cell divides.
