Aurangzeb had sent the powerful Mughal army under the command of the Rajput king, Raja Jai Singh, to subdue Shivaji. The Mughal army surrounded the fort of Purandhar. The Marathas gave a brave fight but sued for peace after few days.

Shivaji had to sign the Treaty of Purandhar in 1665 CE. The Treaty of Purandhar was thus signed between Shivaji and the Mughals.

According to the terms of the treaty, Shivaji had to surrender 23 forts to the Mughals and accept the suzerainty of the Mughal emperor. Jai Singh also convinced Shivaji to go to Agra and attend the Mughal court.
