Carbonic anhydrase is the zinc containing enzyme that catalyzes the interconversion of CO2 with HCO3- and H+. Carbon dioxide formed as a result of tissue metabolism combines with water to form carbonic acid. High pCO2 favours the formation of HCO3- and H+.
