  • In most birds and reptiles, an egg is a zygote, resulting from fertilisation of the ovum.
  • It nourishes and protects the embryo. 
  • Reptile and bird eggs which are laid out of the water, are surrounded by a protective calcareous shell, either flexible or inflexible.
  • They are oviparous in nature. Oviparous animals are animals that lay eggs, with little or no other development within the mother.
  • Hence, the eggs once laid undergo a maturation or incubation period, before the young one hatches from it.
