In most birds and reptiles, an egg is a zygote, resulting from fertilisation of the ovum.
It nourishes and protects the embryo.
Reptile and bird eggs which are laid out of the water, are surrounded by a protective calcareous shell, either flexible or inflexible.
They are oviparous in nature. Oviparous animals are animals that lay eggs, with little or no other development within the mother.
Hence, the eggs once laid undergo a maturation or incubation period, before the young one hatches from it.
