Expert Answer
- In most birds and reptiles, an egg is a zygote, resulting from fertilisation of the ovum.
- It nourishes and protects the embryo.
- Reptile and bird eggs which are laid out of the water, are surrounded by a protective calcareous shell, either flexible or inflexible.
- They are oviparous in nature. Oviparous animals are animals that lay eggs, with little or no other development within the mother.
- Hence, the eggs once laid undergo a maturation or incubation period, before the young one hatches from it.
