Resistance of a wire is inversely proportional to area or square of radius.

If R is radius, let the resistance be  ( k/R2 ) Ω.

Power required to melt the wire when 1 A current is paased  = ( k/R2 ) × 1  = ( k/R2 ) Watts  .................(1)

Let R1 be the radius of wire of same material and same length and passing current is 3 A.

If this wire of radius R1 melts  then required power = ( k/R12 ) ×3×3 Watts  = ( k/R12 ) ×9 Watts  ...................(2)

powers given by eqn.(1) and eqn.(2) are same.   ( k/R12 ) ×9 = ( k/R2 )   or  R1= 9 R2    or  R1 = 3R
