Expert Answer
Let d be the distance to be travelled to reach school .
If speed is 2.5 km/hr , time taken to travel = distance / speed = ( d/2.5 ) hour
If above time is 6 minutes late , i.e. ( 6/60 ) hour = ( 1/10 ) hour late ,
then correct time t to be taken to reach the school just in time is
t = [ (d/2.5) - ( 1/10 ) ] hour ...............................(1)
If speed is 3.5 km/hr , time taken to travel = ( d/3.5 ) hour
If above time is 6 minutes early , i.e., (1/10) hour early ,
then correct time to be taken to reach the school just in time is
t = [ (d/3.5) + (1/10) ] hour ..................................(2)
By equating equations (1) and (2) , we get
By solving above equation, we get d = 1.75 km
