What would happen if the three ear ossicles are replaced by a single bone

There are instances where the three ear ossicles are replaced with a single bone like a disease called otitis media. But the fact is that if the bone replaces these ossicles, then that single bone cannot connect to the tympanic membrane which will both way decrease and increase the sound pressure and excessive sound respectively.
