Last week our eco club, Save the Planet, organized a Growing Plants Day on the occasion of Earth hour. We had invited children from the nearby housing complexes for a sapling distribution and planting drive.

It was a day well spent with the young and old alike. We visited the horticulture nursery nearby to kickstart the plantation drive for the day. The Chairman of the eco club stressed the orchardists and horticulture officials to make people aware about the importance of planting trees. There was also an informative session with  horticulture experts for expert advice including spray schedule, fertilisers, irrigation, pruning and other purposes, which was immensely enjoyed by people who love gardening and have their own plantations in theor native homes.

We planted a total of 200 saplings along the roads most of which were near important landmarks of the area such as bus stands, ATMs, and the bus depot. The remaining saplings were planted in the two public parks of the areas.

Due to the rapid urbanization, the ever-increasing concrete jungles, the destruction of innumerable trees and forests as also their decreasing numbers as a result of forest fires, the enormous adversity of global warming is left glaring straight at us. The plantation not only adds to the beauty of nature, but it also helps to cease global warming and maintain the balance disturbed by climate change and also maintain environmental balance. The plantation drive was carried out with a purpose to urge all the citizens to carry out similar exercises in their respective areas to ensure a pollution free environment.
