Characteristics of coelenterates:

• There are finger-like projections called tentacles present near the mouth for catching food.
• Nervous system is primitive; has only a network of nerve cells.
• Corals develop hard exoskeletons made of lime or calcium carbonate from their secretions. These structures are not bones.
