Why were the
bats of earlier times curved outwards at the bottom?

The earlier cricket bats were roughly of the same shape like the hockey sticks, i.e. curved outwards at the bottom because the ball was bowled underarm along the ground. Thus, the curve at the end of the bat gave the batsman the best chance of making contact with the ball.
