Guru Nanak was the founder of Sikhism who was a guru or teacher. The word ‘Sikh’ is derived from a word which means disciple. Thus, Sikhism is also referred to as Gurumat which means guru’s doctrine. It is God who is the original guru and Nanak is his chosen disciple.
