Expert Answer
- A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into its shadow.
- This occurs when the sun, Earth, and moon are aligned very close to each other with the Earth in the middle.
- A partial lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and Moon. During this event only a portion of the Moon passes through Earth's umbral shadow.
- Whereas, during a total lunar eclipse has the direct sunlight completely blocked by the earth's shadow.
- An eclipse of the Moon can only occur at Full Moon, and only if the Moon passes through some portion of Earth's shadow.
