Expert Answer:
A sprain is an injury to a ligament which is caused due to intentional pressure (extra pressure). Applying ice decrease blood flow to the sprained area thereby
1. reducing sweling or inflammation
2. reducing muscle pain
Immediately after the injury occurs, ice should be applied to the ankle and the leg should be elevated above the level of the heart for 15 to 20 minutes.
