Parthenocarpy is the development of a fruit without prior fertilization. Here the egg is not fertilized in the ovary. The fruit is therefore seedless. Parthenocarpy is desirable in fruit crops that may be difficult to pollinate or fertilize as well as in edible fruits with hard seeds.
