In females, mensturation is the periodic discharge of unfertilized egg, mucous, broken uterus walls along with the blood. The menstrual cycle is usually of 28 days.
Each month during the menstrual cycle, an egg will ripen and be released by the ovary. This phenomenon is called ovulation. For a woman with a 28-day menstrual cycle (the first day of menstruation being day one), ovulation takes place sometime around day 14. The egg is released into the pelvic cavity and swept into the fallopian tube. The released ovum remains viable for about 2 days. If mating takes place during this time, the sperms can fuse with the released ovum and fertilization can take place.
