What are the limitations in making antiviral medicines?

Expert Answer:

  • Viruses have different forms and they can only grow, divide and live inside the body of a host. They cannot survive without a host.
  • They rely entirely on the host cell machinery to survive and replicate. So, to kill viruses we need to kill some of the host cells as well.
  • The viruses are mutating continuously, so the vaccines which act once successfully may not be effective next time.
  • For all these reasons, it is difficult to develop antiviral medicines.
