Nationalism spreads when people begin to believe that they are all part of the same nation, when they discover some unity that binds them together. People belonging to various castes, sub castes, sects, religions, and regions came together to fight against the British rule in the country. They unitedly opposed the unjust and exploitative policies of the British. In various parts of the country, several struggles were launched by Indians against exploitation. And it was through these common yet disparate struggles that a sense of collective identity and national belonging arose among the Indians.
