"The pre-modern worl shrank greatly in the sixteenth century after European saviors found a sea route to Asia and also successfully crossed the western ocean to America"- what do they mean by "shrank" here? I'm really confused as shouldn't discovering new routes open the known world up more?

Shrank here means the world came closer, or the world which earlier looked very vast, now became smaller and easy to access due to the discovery of sea route to Asia by the European saviours. They also successfully crossed the western ocean to America, thus making trade easy and convenient.
