CBSE Class 10 Answered
State the importance of chromosomal difference between sperms and eggs of humans?
Asked by | 15 Mar, 2013, 04:38: PM
Both sperm and ovum possess 23 chromosomes (haploid). The egg will always have an X chromosome, whereas the sperm may possess either an X chromosome or a Y chromosome. If the egg is fertilized by an X-bearing sperm from its father, then the embryo will have XX, and that baby will be a girl. If a Y-bearing sperm cell fertilizes the egg, then the embryo will have XY, and the baby will be a boy.
