Image due to plane mirror is at a distace x behind the plane mirror.
If image due to convex mirror coincide with image due to plane mirror,
then image-to-mirror distance for convex mirror is (y-x).

we have mirror equation for convex mirror,  (1/u) + (1/v) = 1/f ...............(1)

where u is object-to-mirror distance which is given by, u = -(x+y)  [ sign convention is applied ]
v is image-to-mirror distance which is given by, v = -(y-x) = (x-y)  [ sign convention is applied ]

hence from (1), we have   [ 1/(x-y) ] - [ 1/(x+y) ] = 1/f ...............(2)

After simpification, we get from eqn.(2),  f = ( x2 - y2 ) / (2y)
