for refraction at spherical surface we have, begin mathsize 12px style n subscript 2 over v space minus space n subscript 1 over u space equals space fraction numerator n subscript 2 minus n subscript 1 over denominator R end fraction end style ...................(1)
here n2 = μ ,  n1 = 1,  v = 2R,  u = x = -2R (sign convention)
 
Hence eqn.(1) is written as ,   begin mathsize 12px style fraction numerator mu over denominator 2 R end fraction space minus space fraction numerator 1 over denominator negative 2 R end fraction space equals space fraction numerator mu minus 1 over denominator R end fraction end style  ...................(2)
we get μ = 3 from eqn.(2)

here n2 = μ ,  n1 = 1,  v = 2R,  u = x = ∞

we get μ = 2 from eqn.(3)
