  • A single autosomal gene with two alleles determines whether you have attached or fused earlobes or free-hanging earlobes. The allele for free-hanging earlobes (F) is dominant to the allele for attached earlobes (f).

Generation I:

  • Thus, in generation I, the mother has free earlobes (FF or Ff) while the father has attached ealobes (ff).

Generation II:

  • In generation II, there are 4 offspring, 2 males and 2 females.
  • Both males (2, 4) have free earlobes, which means that their genotype will be Ff as F comes from mother and f from father.
  • 1 female (3) has free earlobes, which means that her genotype will be Ff as F comes from mother and f from father.
  • However, 1 female (1)  has attached earlobes, which means that her genotype will be ff as f comes from mother and f from father.
  • This  means, that the genotype of mother is Ff.

Generation III:

  • In generation III, male (1), is the son of female (1) who has genotype ff. Thus, male (1) with free earlobes will have the genotype (Ff).
  • Female (2), is the daughter of female (1) who has genotype ff. Thus, female (2) with attached earlobes will have genotype (ff).
  • Thus, the father of the above children will have the genotype (Ff) and has free earlobes.
  • In generation III, females (3, 4, 5) have free earlobes. They are the offspring of female 3 from generation II, with genotype Ff. Now since, all these offspring have free earlobes and their father also has free earlobes, this implies that their father has genotype FF. All the females (3, 4, 5) have genotype FF or Ff.
