Please explain the sin cos vector distribution

Expert Answer
Torque τ acting on the needle, τ = μ × B = μ B sin30 ................. (1)
Torque required for the applied force = r × F = (l/2)×F×cos30 ................(2)
where μ is magnetic moment, B is vertical component of earths magnetic field, l is length of magnet.
Torques given by both the above equations balance each other to keep the needle at 30º angle with vertical.
From eqn.(1) and (2), F = ( μ×B ) tan30 /(l/2) = 10×40×10-6 / [ ( 2/2) × √3 ] = 23 × 10-2 N
