Towns were classified on the basis of functions that they performed. There were capital towns, temple towns, pilgrimage towns, craft towns, commercial towns and trading towns. For example, Thanjavur had many beautiful temples and pilgrims all over the country visited these temples. Thus, Thanjavur came to be known as the temple town.
Capital town was a center of administration where the king lived along with his nobles and ministers. For example, Agra was a prominent capital town in Mughal India.
