2(i)

4(2x + 1) = 3(x – 1) + 7

8x + 4 = 3x – 3 + 7

Shifting variable terms to left hand side and constants to right hand side

8x – 3x = – 3 + 7 – 4

5x = 7 – 7

5x = 0

Therefore, x = 0

3(i)

5y – 2{y – 3(y – 5)} = 6

5y – 2{y – 3y + 15} = 6

5y – 2{–2y + 15} = 6

5y + 4y – 30 = 6

9y – 30 = 6

9y = 6 + 30

9y = 36

Therefore, y = 4
