The mansabdars and jagirdars were high officials in the Mughal court who were given land in lieu of salaries. Mansabdars also maintained armies which fought for the king at the time of a war. After the death of Aurangzeb, the Mughal rulers failed to keep a check on the powers of the mansabdars and jagirdars. The latter not only collected revenues from the land assigned to them but also administrated the land. This gave them political, military and economic powers over a greater part of the Mughal Empire. This resulted in the breakdown of the administrative machinery of the Empire and gradually the Mughal Empire began to disintegrate.
