Three characteristics of particles of matter are:
1.Particles of matter have space between them. For example: When we make tea, coffee, particles of one type of matter get into the spaces between particles of the other. This shows that there is enough space between particles of matter.
2.Particles of matter are continuously moving. For example: When we light an incense stick, we can get the smell sitting at a distance indicating that the particles are continuously moving.
3.Particles of matter attract each other. For example: If we try breaking the stream of water from a tap with our fingers, we are not able to cut the stream and this suggests that particles of matter have force of attraction acting between them.
The characteristics responsible for the following are:
(a) Spreading of smell of scent in a room is due to diffusion.
(b) Being fluid, it has no shape, hence water takes the shape of the vessel in which poured.
