Khilafat movement was started by Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali.
In the First World War, Turkey was defeated by the British and the Ottaman empire was diveded. The sultan of Turkey was deprived of all authority.The caliph was looked upon as the religious head of muslims. It was felt that any weaking of caliph's position would affect position of muslims. Thus, muslim population in India started the Khilafat movement.
