Of the 100 KJ available to the third trophic level, they will be able to use only 10% i.e. 10 KJ

If 100 KJ of energy is available to the third trophic level (bird), then 1000 KJ is available to the second trophic level (caterpillar). This 1000 KJ has been provided by plants.

(Plants have been provided with 100000 KJ of energy in this case, of which they could utilise only 1% i.e. 1000 KJ of energy, which is available to the next trophic level.)
