How were stupas and temples built?

There were several stages in building a stupa or a temple. These were

  Because building a stupa was an expensive affair, it was decided by the kings and the queens.

  After the decision was taken, quality stone had to be found, quarried and transported to the place which was often carefully chosen for the new building.

  Then these rough blocks of stone had to be shaped and carved into pillars and panels for walls, floors and ceilings.

  Finally, they had to be placed in precisely the right position.

  Besides, when devotees came to visit the temple or the stupa, they often brought gifts, which were used to decorate the buildings.
