During the Swadeshi movement in Bengal, a tricolour flag was designed. Its main features were:

  • The flag consisted of three colours—red, green and yellow.
  • It also had eight lotuses which represented the eight British provinces in India.
  • It had a crescent Moon which represented both Hindus and Muslims.
However, the national flag of India now is a horizontal tricolor of deep saffron (kesari) at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom. In the centre of the white band is a navy blue wheel which represents the chakra and has 24 spokes.
