In a topographic map, It is extremely important to first understand the concept of grid reference. One you are through with grid reference, try to understand the symbols that are used on a map to signify various relief features. For example, you should be able to identify drainage patterns, symbols indicating tube wells, wells, causeways, dry tank, swamp, dry river bed etc. Also do not forget to study about the contour lines and the slopes made by them. You should also be able to calculate various scales of the map and their conversion into other units.
