It is during the middle of the menstrual cycle that ovulation takes place in the female. During ovulation, the ovum is released from the ovary and then remains alive for a day or two. If mating occurs during this time, the sperm has a chance to fuse with the ovum, resulting in zygote formation. During other times, since ovum is not released, there is no chance for fertilisation to occur.
