explain why, fertilisation is possible if mating takes place during the middle of menstrual cycle?

It is during the middle of the menstrual cycle that ovulation takes place in the female. During ovulation, the ovum is released from the ovary and then remains alive for a day or two. If mating occurs during this time, the sperm has a chance to fuse with the ovum, resulting in zygote formation. During other times, since ovum is not released, there is no chance for fertilisation to occur.
