answered-by-expert Expert Answer
Dear Student,

An empirical formula represents the simplest whole number ratio of various atoms present in a compound.

The following steps are involved in the calculation of the empirical formula:
Step 1: Conversion of mass percent to grams
Step 2: Calculate the number of moles of each element.

Moles of an element = Mass of element in grams / Atomic mass of the element

The moles of different elements thus calculated represent the relative number of moles.

Step 3: Calculate the simplest molar ratio
Step 4: Write the empirical formula
