Existing plants and animals are classified into six categories. These are
1. Normal species: The population levels of these species are considered normal for their survival. Examples: Cattle and sal
2. Endangered species: Those species which are in danger of becoming extinct are considered endangered species. Examples: Black buck and Indian rhino
3. Vulnerable species: The species may become vulnerable when the number of plants and animals decline to such an extent that they are in danger of becoming endangered species. Examples: Asiatic elephants and blue sheep
4. Rare species: These are species with a small population which may soon be classified as vulnerable or endangered species if they are continuously hunted or destroyed. Examples: Desert fox and Asiatic buffalo
5. Endemic species: These species are found in only particular regions or areas which are generally isolated by natural and geographical barriers. Examples: Andaman wild pig and Nicobar pigeon
6. Extinct species: Those species which are no longer found in their natural habitat are known as extinct species. Examples: Asiatic cheetah and pink head duck
