Important measures taken by Sher Shah to boost the growth of trade and commerce:
- Sher Shah constructed roads and inns for the growth of trade and commerce. It became easier for the merchants and travellers to travel from one part of the country to the other.
- To make the taxation system simple, he abolished all the duties on goods except two. Only goods brought into the country were charged, and duties were levied on the goods which were sold.
- The duty of protecting traders and merchants was given to the zamindars or village headmen of the villages.
- Sher Shah Suri made many efforts to promote trade and commerce by introducing various new weights and measures. He introduced coins of gold, silver and copper of uniform standards.
- Perhaps the greatest contribution of Sher Shah Suri was the introduction of a silver rupia of standard weight. This rupia was used for several centuries even after the death of Sher Shah Suri.
- The gold coins issued by him were called ‘mohurs’ which weighted 169 gm. His copper coins were called ‘dams’.
