NEET Class neet Answered
Direction of Frictional force is horizontal ( right or left) , when we consider a horizontal surface , but the direction of normal reaction is vertical. But since frictional force, and normal reaction are vectors, and the equation is, f = coefficient of friction × normal reaction, shouldn't frictional force and normal reaction have same direction? But they are actually perpendicular to each other. How is this possible?

Expert Answer
magnitude of friction force f and magnitude of normal reaction force N are related using friction coefficient μ.
μ = f / N ..........................(1)
Friction force acts at contact surface in a direction opposite to motion of the body. This friction force resists the motion of the body.
Normal reaction force acts at contact surface as a reaction force to the force applied by the body to the contact surface.
Force applied by the body to the contact surface and reaction force exerted by the contact surface towards
the body are parallel but in opposite direction.
Hence magnitude of friction force f depends only on magnitude of reaction force N as given by equation (1)
