 Distillation and Fractional distillation

Distillation

Fractional distillation

This method is used for the separation of components of a mixture containing two miscible liquids which boil without decomposition and have a sufficient difference in their boiling points.

This method is used for the separation of a mixture containing two miscible liquids, for which the difference in their boiling points is less than 25oC.

Example: Separation of a mixture of acetone and water.

Example: Separation of a mixture of benzene and toluene.

2.Elements and Compounds:

Element

Compound

It is a pure substance which cannot be converted into simpler substances by any physical or chemical means. Properties of compounds are different from their constituent elements.
It is made up of only one kind of atoms.

It is made up of two or more different kinds of atoms.
Elements cannot be broken down into two or more simpler substances by any physical or chemical means.
A compound can be divided into simpler substances only by chemical means.

Elements have their own set of properties

Properties of compounds are different from their constituent elements.

Example:

Iron is grey coloured and attracted by a magnet.

Sulphur is yellow coloured and soluble in carbon disulphid

Example:

Iron sulphide is a black substance which is not attracted by a magnet and insoluble in carbon disulphide.

While its constituent elements,Iron is grey coloured and attracted by a magnet.
