During the beginning of the medieval period, Sanskrit was a prominent language in North India.
Two great works were written in Kashmir-Somadeva’s ‘Kathasaritsagar’ and Kalhan’s ‘Rajtaringani’. These are considered to be first historical books of India.
Another famous work during this period was ‘Geetgovind’ by Jayadeva.
‘Prithviraj Raso’ by Chandbardai was an early form of Hindi literature. This work dealt with the heroic deeds of Prithvi Raj Chauhan. Another important work during this period was ‘Bhasya’ by Shankaracharya.
Besides it,another notable composition was ‘Vikramankdevcharit’. It depicted the life story of the Chalukya King Vikramaditya VI.
The Turks introduced the Arab Iranian tradition of history writing to India.
Ziauddin Barani wrote ‘Tarikh-e-Firozshahi’ which gave an account of the reign of Alauddin Khalji and Tughlaq kings.Barni also wrote ‘fatwa-e-Jahandari’.
Amir Khusro was a remarkable poet and writer at this time. He was a disciple of a famous saint, Nizamuddin Auliya. Some of his poeticworks were ‘Ashiqua’, ‘Nuh’, ‘Khazain-ul-Futuh’ and ‘the Kiratul Sadayan’.
Amir Khusro represented harmony in the Indian culture. He even composed many verses in ‘Hindawi’
