Subject: Are millennials ungrateful citizens?
Dear Sir,
This is with regard a recent article in your newspaper alleging that the millennial generation thinks only of themselves and care little of the rights and needs of others. As a millennial, I would like to put my two cents in.
To begin with, I think one should fairly believe that every coin had two sides. Your reporter left no stone unturned while citing instances of how there have been increased cases of youngsters creating a ruckus n public parks and libraries. There were also several cases of school dropouts and teenagers from privileged families indulging in antisocial activities. Further, I read about several valid cases of public littering, hooliganism, eve-teasing and petty crimes.
I am thankful to you for exposing the valid antisocial activities. However, being cynical about the millennial generation based on a few findings of disturbing trends is incomplete research. For more than two years now, a group named Young Minds at Work has been actively involved in changing lives of underprivileged locals in the city. They work with social workers and registered NGOs and carry out distribution of meals for the poor and scholarships for underprivileged students. The group also conducts workshops on personality development and self-defence. In addition, the various cleanliness drives that are carried out in the city are also organised by the group.
There are different kinds of people in the city and as a conscious citizen it is my responsibility to look both at the good and the bad. I don’t think name calling and criticising without taking the whole picture into account is being judgemental.
The millennial generation is a thriving in an era that is unique in its own kind. Some youngsters use the resources at their disposal to their advantage. Others falter. However, as a newspaper, it is your duty to help bring about a change by encouraging model behaviour and not publicising the bad that is out there in the world.
Yours sincerely,
